Record-stores in Wien, Vienna, Austria
Gramola
From Graz I went to Vienna and what followed was one of the best record store tours ever. My first stop was Gramola in the center of Vienna, very close to famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Behind the counter I met Ronald, and he told me, that this store has been here at this location since 1924! It’s the oldest record store in Austria. It was founded by his great-grandfather, so it’s family business for 95 years. His father Richard is still the owner - he is 74 years old and works at the store for 55 years now. Gramola focuses on Classical music and sells CDs, no vinyl. On the wall you can see one of a few original paintings showing the logo for “His Master’s Voice” with Nipper.

Seven Star Records
This store is in the Siebensterngasse, which is german for Seven Stars Street, so that’s where the name comes from. This store is new and unfortunately I do not know too much about it.

Supersense
This is not the usual kind of record store, you won't get dusty fingers at Supersense. They don't have many records, but the store is full of analog equipment, not just audio but also cameras, type writers etc. Here you can get hand cut master records from digital and from analog tapes. They have an antique record elevator with a recording function to record your own voice. They hand print artworks etc. It's a bit like a museum combined with a store and a cafe.

DaCapo Klassik & Jazz GmbH
We are still in the city centre, and this is another store with a focus on Classical music. Behind the counter I met Hans, who opened this store in 2007 and has appr. 18.000 CDs in the store. DaCapo is a musical term that means “repeat from the beginning”.

Lenny's Music Store
Quite big record store (200m2) selling 2nd Hand, New Releases, Bargain LPs and CDs as well as a big selection of english music books, merchandise and many more. A lot of music memorabilia like gold records, signed stuff etc on the walls. A little bit outside of the city centre but easily reachable with subway and bus.

Moses Records
On the website to this store you can read a lot about the personal record collector history of Peter, one of the two founders. In 2002 he met Moses, and together they decided to start a record store. They opened it in January 2004, Moses is the boss, Peter runs the store. When I came to Moses, none of them was there, instead I met a woman who did not really want to appear on a photo. You can find a lot of cheap and random stuff in the back room, while the main room is for the more expensive selection. They also claim this is the largest record store in Vieanna, but I’m pretty sure some of the others were larger. What do you think?

Leopold Penzauer owns the Rock Shop since 1987, it was founded 4-5 years earlier. The main location has always been at this address, but in the 90s they had two more locations in Vienna. You’ll find Classic Rock from all decades, plus some RnB, Blues and Oldies, mainly 2nd hand

das LOKal
So this is really a special store, and it’s all explained on the website daslokal.net . I’ll try to translate it: Basically Das LOKal is an employment project for people who are currently unable to gain a foothold in the primary labor market due to mental health problems. They can work here and learn all about running a café, a book store or a record store. In the store I met a few people, one of them was Eva, who is the manager of this project. If you come to Vienna, you should definitely go here, it’s a nice atmosphere, they have a good selection, good prices and I was happy to see such an amazing project.

SingSing Records
SingSing is one of the stores, where you walk in and you know you're going to stay for hours. They never focused on a style, so you can find everything. The owner Robert started SingSing back in 1984, and the store has been at this location for 30 years now. Robert was too shy for a photo, so instead you can see his colleague Fred presenting his favourite record

Substance
💿 RSD ParticipantJust across the road form Schallter you find Substance. Inside I met Thomas, one of two owners. He told me: “We started in October 2001 and have always been at this location. Wwe carry indierock, electronic music, Avantgarde, Jazz, Hip Hop, Noise, some Metal. Our main thing and personal love always was vinyl, but of course we carry cds and some dvds as well. In addition we have music-related books, bandshirts and screenprints.”

Schallter Audio & Records
Schallter Audio & Records offers new releases and 2nd hand - not just vinyl, but also books, turntables, gadgets and HiFi. Inside the store I met Walter Gröbchen, who is renown in Austria as a journalist, author, blogger and his obituary on Falco. I did not know all this, when I entered the store, but the other record store owners told me so much about him, he seems to be a legend :-) Anyway, I came into the store, had a short chat with him and then he presented his favourite record, which actually is a record with songs by Sigi Maron and it recently has been released on Schallter, a label Walter Gröbchen reactivated in 2014. Good luck if you try to translate the title.
