Spend a happy hour on a rainy day at Discovery Music - it's a real music lovers' treasure trove. For a second hand record shop its appropriately housed in one of oldest buildings in Barnstaple, complete with a well in its back garden. Discovery Music buy, sell and trade mainly second hand music and are specialists in vinyl, though they also sell CDs and DVDs and films. The shop stocks complete ranges and styles of music so there's always a wide range and variety to browse through. Owner Matthew Poulton says you can feel free to haggle over condition - its all part of the fun. If you're in the market to sell he'll take a look at anything you have but won't guarantee to buy until he's taken a look at it. Matthew loves looking at old records, so is quite happy to give free valuations even if you are just wanting to obtain them for insurance purposes. He says the reason his business has lasted so long is that he's stuck at it, been respectful with his business practices and word of mouth adverising. He's built up a strong reputation for treating people fairly with prices and explanation. The more he thinks he will be able to sell for the more you will receive for selling it to him. Born in Barnstaple, Matthew's the son of an antique dealer who started collecting records at school.He was only 21 when he opened his first shop and now has 20 years' trading experience. Also a lover of vintage clothes you will recognise him instantly as he always wears a black top hat (for self advertising) when in public, even when out on walks with his walking club. The only exception is when he's in church. If you don't know Matthew already go and meet him - he's one of Barnstaple's great characters.
