World of Echo

💿 RSD Participant

World of Echo is a lovely store in Columbia Road. In the store I met Natalie, who told me it exists since 11/2018, so it’s quite new. She said: “We sell 50/50 new and used. We also stock a lot of rare and hard to find records. Absolutely no CDs - vinyl only! We also sell some books and zines. Our focus is on post-punk, new wave, ambient and modern classical, japanese, jazz, krautrock, electronic. The store is located on London’s famous Columbia Road, where the flower market happens every Sunday. We are closed Monday to Wednesday.” Definitely a must-visit on your next trip to London.

Rough Trade East

Rough Trade has always been on my todo-list when I went record shopping in London back in the 90s. But that was Rough Trade in Nottinghill, now called Rough Trade West, and it was (and still is) a small independent store (will post some photos soon). In 2007 Rough Trade opened a huge store in the old Truman Brewery in a courtyard off Brick Lane, and this was totally different to that old, small, dusty store in Nottinghill. This huge store has become their UK flagship store, and of course they sell vinyl, but also a huge selection of books and cds. They have a bar and a stage and all records come with a short description. Behind the counter I met Lee, who is head of this department. : As I mentioned earlier, my 2nd day was dedicated to street art. If you are interested, you should check out this whole area - there is so much to see.

FOPP

Well, this is one of the huge stores in London, not an independent. Fopp was ( or is?) a part of HMV. They have loads of vinyl and books. I especially like the street front of this location. And for this trip it’s my starting point for the record stores of Soho - just because I like Neal’s Yard and the surrounding streets between Fopp and Holburn Station.

Love Vinyl

Love Vinyl, Bespoke Records For East London, est 2014 It’s just a short walk from World Of Echo to Love Vinyl. I was lucky enough to meet all three owners in the store: Dave, Roual and The Mighty Zaf (left to right on the photo). They told me: “We started the shop 5 years ago - June 2014 - and we've always been at this address. We sell purely vinyl - chiefly black music; soul, funk, jazz, African, disco, hip hop, house, techno.” Definitely another favourite store for me.

Eldica Records

This is Eldica. Andy started his store in 2001 and has moved into this location in 2009. I have never been here, although my favourite place to stay is just around the corner. It is in Dalston, and the whole area has changed a lot over the years, many new houses and lots of old stores in the main street. Even @nts_radio is here (you’ll find it). Back to Eldica: As you seen on the photos you can buy vinyl only, no CDs. A focus is on Soul, HipHop, Funk. Eldica also trades in all things Retro, Vintage Gramophones and Record Boxes to Retro Garments and Collectables. Pure Old School. I loved the store.

LN-CC

My 2nd stop in London was @cafeotodalston, but they don’t have many records so I’ll skip that. Check the website for photos. After that I went to a store called LN-CC, and when I saw the building I thought this must be another online store trying to get a marker on the map. But then I saw a small note on the wall next to the bell, followed the sign around the corner and rang the buzzer. After a while the door opened and I was invited into an arty basement - a mixture of gallery, fashion store, club venue and record store. Looked brilliant and very interesting, but it’s main focus is not the record store. Anyway, they have some records for sale and on the photos you see what this record room looks like. Go visit them if you are interested in seeing the other rooms (some information about the concept on their website ln-cc.com ).

Flashback Records

My 2nd day in London was dedicated to Street Art around Brick Lane, but a perfect start for this was Flashback Records with a piece by ALO @alo_art directly next to the store. Inside I found a bright and beautiful store with Kieron behind the counter. He said: “Flashback Records was founded in 1997 by owner Mark Burgess. The first Flashback Records to open it's doors to the public was our Islington shop on Essex Road. Our Crouch End shop opened in 2006, after the former record shop, Listen, faced closure after dimishing sales, something many shops faced at the time. In 2014, Flashback opened it's third shop in Shoreditch a few years ago in 2014. Flashback is known for it's large variety of used vinyl, stocking Rock, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Soul, Dance music and many other genres and sub genres in between and beyond. Flashback remains an independent business and has been around for over 20 years simply because everyone involved with Flashback is knowledgable and passionate about music, first and foremost. Over a decade ago, the owner Mark, sold his house to keep the record shop alive, and thankfully so, because Flashback has grown since then, and is a great place to visit, work, and has a genuine connection with music lovers in a way you won't find in many other places around the world.” I love stores like these, and when I went downstairs I found a basement with a focus on Dub and Reggae. Behind the counter I met Jake and Lorenzo. What a nice store to start my 2nd day in London!

Most of you know Soul Jazz, a label famous for releasing quality compilations since 1993. Well, and they also run a record store: Sounds Of The Universe opened in 2003 in the same house where The Rolling Stones had their studio (you saw the tongue over the door?). Rays Jazz At Foyles

Ray’s Jazz has a long tradition: It was established in 1975 by Ray Smith (1934-2011) and for a long time (since the 80s) it had a location in Shaftesbury Avenue. In 2002 Ray’s was bought by Foyles and moved into Charing Cross Road. So it’s not an independent anymore, but it still has a good celection of vinyl and cds.
