The Business
💿 RSD ParticipantThe Business, a retail experiment (whose past employees include Karl Blau and Phil Elverum), was founded in 1978 by Anacortes legend Glen DesJardins. In its humble beginnings The Business carried everything from stained glass and books to bird seed and photography equipment. Bret Lunsford (Beat Happening, D+) owned The Business from 1995-2004, when it was home to KNW-YR-OWN. Liz and Jensen Lovelett owned the store from 2005-2010 and moved it to its new home in the historical downtown district. Currently owned by Nick Rennis (The Drink Up Honey, Indie Street) The Business continues to culture Anacortes via its selection of new and used LPs, 45s, CDs, DVDs and more. In 2012 Nick and Evie Opp began The Business Distro-, which continues to grow and expand the role of The Business on a global scale. The Business has been an oasis for countless local musicians and craftsmen for years – you name it and we’ll promote it. We’re also a great venue for free in-stores – please check our events for more information and our current schedule.

Ran by two longtime former employees of the late Everyday Music Seattle. KEXP DJ Hans and Tyler Mitchell aim to keep a similar vibe in their new Queen Anne/Uptown space.

Zions Gate Records
Small store with a big selection of all genres, but where this place really shines is in its punk and metal selections. Tons of hard to find gems of crust punk, doom metal, stoner/psych metal, black metal, post rock/metal, old and new hardcore, as well as other niche genres. Strike up a conversation with the workers, they can seem standoffish but are knowledgeable, decent dudes. Prices can range from fair/market value to a few bucks above average, but bear in mind this is a little business, not Amazon. They are also usually willing to take off price of tax when paying cash and sometimes give deals when trading in CDs and LPs. All in all it's a great place for diggers, and they're always playing cool music.

Light In The Attic Record Shop
There is an old house in Detroit or Nashville or New Orleans, and it has one of those old cellars filled with the miscellany accrued over a lifetime. In that musty space is a battered old box next to the water heater, and that box, well, it's showing the detritus of time, and lord knows how long it's been sitting there. Some mysterious feeling draws you to it, and you open it, see some tapes, those old reel-to-reels. You dig further and find the player, shake the dust loose, cue up one of the reels. The anticipation has your heart racing. You hear the hiss. One beat...two...three...
